JRUC Match Reports 1 August 2020

Saturday 1 August was a truly memorable day in the club’s history. It was the single largest day of home matches we’ve ever had! Every team was scheduled to play at home, so we needed to use two fields! Back to back matches from 10:15am (with two matches kicking off at the same time, meant it was going to be huge. Thank you to our amazing army of committee members and volunteers that pitched in to help and make it a success, especially with the extra work needed in this crazy time.

Unfortunately the U14s had a late forfeit from their opponents which meant they didn’t get to play, but for everyone else it was an amazing day. Check out how they went…

The Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Cooma Under 13’s started very strongly, storming ahead 17-0 at half time with 2 tries scored by Cody Maxwell, 1 by Max Naisby and a conversion by Kohen Pearce. They extended the lead early into the 2nd half with tries by Bailey Keyes and Kohen Pearce. Royals came back in the the second half, scoring 4 tries with 2 conversions. End result Piglets 27-royals 24

Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs

The Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs’ 22 (L Pepper 2, M Thrum, J Roarty tries, D Johnson conversion) def Batemans Bay 13.

The Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs hosted Batemans Bay Boars in their first home match of the season. Batemans Bay always show up to play expansive footy with plenty of pace across the park, and this was no exception. The Bay converted early pressure into points, with a penalty goal seeing them take a 3-0 lead after 9 minutes. 

The Bushpigs struck back when hooker Liam Pepper burrowed through in the left corner following a strong passage of play downfield from the men in green. 

However Batemans Bay regained the lead with a converted try shortly after. They extended their lead with a second penalty goal at the 30 minute mark.

The Bushpigs again found space down the left side of the field to break out of their own half. The ball was then shifted through the hands to winger Mitch Thrum on the right side, who got around his opposite number and scooted down the touch line to score in the corner. The Bushpigs went into the break behind 13-10.

The came out firing in the second half, with replacement centre Jake Roarty crashing over after a rampaging run from 25m out. 

From this, the Bushpigs made wholesale changes, with a host of fresh forwards coming on the field to put the tiring Batemans Bay defence under pressure. The Bushpigs began to dominate field position but this didn’t convert into points, until Liam Pepper again crashed over late in the second half. 

The Bushpigs enjoyed their first win of the season, which capped a phenomenal day of rugby with 5 other juniors matches taking place on a perfect sunny day.

The Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs have a bye next weekend, before hitting the road to Bungendore on August 15. The next home match is Saturday 22 August against Taralga.

First Tracks Boardstore Under 10s

First Tracks Boardstore Under 10s 29 (R Filtness 3, N McMahon, Z Tripet tries; J Moore 2 conversions) def Marist Sky 5

The First Tracks Boardstore Under 10’s Piglets had the 2 hour commute up the Monaro Highway to Canberra on Saturday to play Marist. The group have had a massive re-shuffle from last year’s premiership winning team: all but 3 players moved up into the under 12’s, seeinhg 9 new players coming into the squad for their first year of rugby. 

Under a sunny sky and a warm winter’s morning, the whistle went off and the game was underway with Jindabyne kicking off down the field. Marist settled into the game very quickly and tested the piglets defence, crossing the line putting the first 5-pointer on the scoreboard. But all this really did for the piglets was to get their minds into the game and very quickly got in front on the scoreboard with skipper, Ryan Filtness getting over for a spectacular try, converted by rugby league new recruit from Cooma, ‘Junior.’

From there, the piglets really took over the game with some hard, straight running and put their bodies behind their tackles giving Marist very little reprieve. The likes of Jamison Watling, Tanner Moore and Mason Marks who have all come into the squad this year were devastating with some direct ball running and strong defence. This gave the Piglet’s backline an opportunity to get the ball to Nate McMahon who exploited the broken defence with some agile footwork and secured another five-pointer. 

As the game grew into the final minutes, the little Piglets never gave up and continued to play with a lot of heart. Their defence was devastating at the tackle, driving opposition back at every contact without any player excluded, which turned over possession time and time again. 

The game was a great celebration of Jindabyne Bushpigs Rugby and was well summed up by Zach Tripet moments before the final whistle blowing, charging through the Marist defence getting over for the Piglet’s fifth try.

Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs

The Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs’ scheduled match against Broulee was cancelled and the match declared a 0-0 draw. Broulee decided to suspend participation in matches and training in the short term due to COVID-19 in their local region. We support their decision and hope they can return to the field soon.

The Hip Pocket Workwear Under 13’s Piglets played their first match for the season against Uni Norths at Southwell Park.After such a long break the boys were all psyched to play.There were 9 tries scored by Robin Jackson, Mitch McMahon and Cody Becker with 4 conversions kicked by Kohen Pearce.

The whole team put in an outstanding effort giving them the win 53/25

Under 14s

Under 14s 26 def St Edmunds 0

Great to be back on the field. Although the crowds may have been smaller the passion and enthusiasm was no less diminished.

The Under 14 Piglets travelled to Canberra for their first match to take on St Edmunds. The boys played a great game running away 26 – 0 victors. Tries to Charlie Klemm, Jesse Chatten and a double for Fyfe Thomson, successful conversions to Harry Dutch, Tom Mackenzie and Joe Quinlan.

Everyone is looking forward to next week when they again travel to Canberra this time to take on Marist.

The Rip Curl Jindabyne Under 16s travelled to Royals in Canberra. 12-7 to us. Tries to Billy Small #8, Ethan Cawthorn #10, 1 successful & 1 unsuccessful conversion to Bryon Thake #12.

Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs 10 def by Taralga 24

The Lake Jindabyne Hotel Bushpigs travelled to Taralga seeking to avenge their narrow defeat in last year’s Preliminary final. They started strong, with tries to Daniel Josikovski and Cooper Swan, to take a 10-0 lead into the break. However the 2019 minor premiers dug deep to get back into the game, with a length of the field try in the dying minutes giving Taralga a 24-10 win. 

The Bushpigs have their first home match of the season next Saturday 25 July, hosting Broulee Dolphins at JJ Connors Oval Jindabyne. Kick off 2:30pm.
